How I Stay Motivated To Work Out
A question I am often asked is how I stay motivated to work out 5-6x per week. I must admit, it isn’t always easy to stay motivated on a daily basis which is why I am a big believer in creating good habits. Here are some tips that work for me which keep me active 5-6x per week that you may find helpful and can fit into your daily routine.

- Find your WHY. If you are constantly starting or stopping a fitness routine, ask yourself why you even started exercising in the first place? And why did you stop? Really dig deep here, get a pen and paper and sit yourself down with no distractions and you will find your why to what will push you everyday. Find it in yourself to have that vision of why you want this. For me, I ask myself how I want to look and feel today, tomorrow, next month, next year, in 5 years… This is the force that drives me. For others, it might be because they want to be strong and healthy to watch their children grow up and stay active with them. Others could be to lower their blood pressure. Whatever the reason, it must be unique to you and have a strong meaning. This why factor has to be on your mind daily to keep you going when you want to give up.
- Plan your workout routine ahead of time. This one is major! My boss who I look up to says “failing to plan is planning to fail” and I can relate. I like to plan ahead and schedule my week ahead on a Sunday afternoon. This avoids the “Sunday Scaries” since I can relieve some anxiety by making up my ideal workout routine based off my work schedule. Look at your work or school schedule and see what days you can fit in workouts, either on your own, in a group class or with your trainer. Write them down in your calendar. Get a friend who wants to come with you. Chances are, you are less likely to cancel if you have a friend holding you accountable and/or have it written as plans for yourself ahead of time.
- Set a long-term and short-term goals. Breaking your goals down into long-term and short-term is a key to my clients success. Be realistic. Work your way there. For example, your 6-month goal can be to incorporate weight training into your workout routine 4 days per week. To get there, your short-term goal may be to start with 1 day a week of weight training with by 3 days of cardio exercise. Don’t create unrealistic goals for yourself. Think of this as something which is realistic, sustainable and not so drastic.
- Great music: create or find a playlist. I don’t know about you, but I’ve always loved great music. A great song can keep me energized and push me through some of my toughest workout routines. If I am doing high intensity cardio, I like EDM or house music. When I lift weights, sometimes I feel in the mood for rap or hip-hop. If I am in a bad mood, I can put on a good playlist and get a quick workout routine done and feel 100x better at the end of it. Whatever music genre you like, find or create a playlist and get going! Find me @bodyxbrooke on Apple Music to hear what I am listening to! I always create new playlists at least once a month to keep my music fresh.
- Make your workouts fun! Find classes you enjoy or a routine that you don’t dread doing. Mix it up and find something you like! If you don’t like dancing in a Zumba class, then maybe you’d like a boot camp workout. If yoga isn’t your thing, perhaps you’d like a circuit training style. Whatever it is or isn’t, I am sure you can find something to keep you staying active which you enjoy. Once you get used to a workout and no longer feel like it’s providing you what you need, look for a new instructor, class or routine. Changing it up and making the workout enjoyable is key to staying motivated in your workouts.
- Wear clothing you are comfortable in. This may sound silly, but I find this to be true. If you are not comfortable wearing a crop top and skin tight leggings, then don’t wear it. Are you not supportive in your sports bra? Ditch the workout apparel which you’ve outgrown (or outworn) and pick outfits that you are comfortable working out in. If you are self-conscious about your body in a particular fit of clothing, your workout will reflect that. Depending on what style training I am doing, my go-to brands are Adidas, Lululemon, Victoria Sport and Champion.
- Find others supportive of your lifestyle. Surrounding yourself with like-minded individuals is major. Think about the people you are surround by and ask yourself if they are supportive of your goals. If your friends or family aren’t interested in getting fit, don’t let that discourage you! I’ve met some of my closest friends in the gym or at fitness studios! I’ve also seen great friendships be made during many of the Challenge programs I offer at DJ Got Me Fit which keeps everyone motivated and accountable during and after the programs. Don’t be afraid to ask someone (online or in real life) who achieved what you want and ask them their daily behaviors. Don’t forget, you can also be your biggest fan. Most of us are negative, so stop the negative self-talk. It is so important that you are kind to yourself through this process. Can’t find anyone? Hire a coach to stay accountable through your journey.

I hope you found some of this information useful! No one is motivated 100% of the time, so it’s okay to look for the help of others when you can’t find it within yourself. Once you make these changes as part of a daily routine, it will become second nature to practice working out just like its a daily ritual to eat and brush your teeth.
If you are severely unmotivated or have a hard time motivating yourself to accomplish even basic, necessary goals such as getting out of bed, working, or practicing personal hygiene, see a doctor or counselor – this may be a sign of depression.
